Building Performance and Testing for Energy Efficiencies
Arnold McIntyre, Energy Coordinator for Ferris State University.
For the past 30 years, the weatherization/home improvement industry has stagnated under budgetary constraints, low energy prices, lack of interest, and an active new construction market. Today, hundreds of millions of dollars and tens of thousands of jobs are being created in the improvement of building shell performance for homes, and assisting homeowners in conservation measures.  To support these activities, Ferris State University has designed a national training and certification program that the Home Builders Institute (“HBI”) and the National Association of Home Builders (“NAHB”), the largest building and remodeling association in the country, are endorsing.   The program is designed to instill a sustainable educational career path, which can be delivered to work forces and contractors through the work force development, community college, and union networks.  This presentation outlines the curriculum and the experiences gained from the delivery of program and its practicum’s through two pilot runs.

Practical Plumbing Layouts
Gary Klein, Managing Partner of Affiliated International Management, LLC will help participants evaluate the water, energy and time efficiency of a hot water distribution system. When is it appropriate to install water heaters in multiple locations or use drain water heat recovery? How can you deliver hot water to every fixture, wasting less than 1 cup of water while waiting for the hot water to arrive, and wasting less energy than would have been wasted running the water down the drain? This highly interactive session will explore the answers to these questions with a full-scale floor plan and tape of different widths representing pipes of different diameters. Another teaching technique employed is a pipe volume demonstration which involves about 10 people, each of whom is holding a piece of tubing with different lengths and diameters, all containing the same volume.

The Structure is an Integrated System
Berry Smith of Training for the Trades will discuss: the airtight building shell, installation, control moisture infiltration air-conditioning performance, ventilation, and balance air pressure.  Half of these issues of the responsibility for the HVAC contractor, the other half are the responsibility of the builder. If there are design problems in any part of these six issues, even those that are the responsibility of the HVAC contractor, the mechanical system won't work properly.  This session will cover  how each part of the building is important to the occupants comfort, health and how to ensure that you have designed and installed the efficient system.
